Abstract Background: Virus hepatitis infection has amerced as a major public health concern in Egypt. The prevalence of hepatitis virus among Egyptian is extremely high when compared with the prevalence in Europe and USA and even other countries in middle- east. it was the main cause of chronic liver disease in Egypt and the overall predicted number of truly infected individuals in Egypt working population more than S million and, may be serious problem facing the national health and, economic development in Egypt (Chin, 2010). Aim of this study was to develop health educational intervention to improve nurse’s knowledge and practices about care given to hepatitis patients. Design: A quasi- experimental study. Setting: The study was carried out in medical departments at Suez Canal University Hospitals. Study subjects: All nurses (No=SO) worked in the above mentioned setting and have the following criteria; their experience not less than one year and accept to participate in the study. Data collection tools: the researcher used two tools; A) Questionnaire sheet: (pre-post format) to assess the nurses’ knowledge about caring of patients with viral hepatitis & B) Nurses practice observational checklist covering all the nursing procedures. Results: There was highly statistical significant difference in the nurses’ total level of knowledge & practice regarding caring of patients with viral hepatitis (pre-post) . and (pre-follow up) at p<O.OOl after implementation of health educational intervention. In addition, it revealed that statistical significant relation between total level of nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding caring of patients with viral hepatitis at p<O.OS. Also, there was a significance positive correlation. between total level of nurses’ knowledge and qualification pre-program at p<O.OS & there was a significance positive correlation between total level of their knowledge and their years of experience post program implementation at p<O.OS. Conclusion: The health educational intervention had statistically significance positive effect on improving the knowledge and practice of nurses regarding caring for patients with viral hepatitis. Throughout the study phases immediately post program and three months later (follow up). Recommendation: The study recommended Continuous in-service training program and refreshing course should be conducted for nurses to update their knowledge and practice about ’4> :H,,..,1i/IIi,i11i caring for patients with viral hepatitis. |
