Abstract Introduction:Using computer programs in design of steel bridges is very important for designers. Most popular international codes like Australian, People’s Republic of China, Eastern Europe, Japanese, North America, Western Europe, Canadian and Spanish have steel programs design according to their codes. There are no programs for design according to the Egyptian Codes of Practice. So, it is necessary to prepare a steel program for design according to the Egyptian Codes of Practice based on “Allowable Stress Design” (ASD) as well as “Load and Resistance Factor Design” (LRFD).OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:New version of the Egyptian Code of Practice (ECP) for Steel Bridges (LRFD) covers the design of steel and composite elements and components. This new code is fundamentally different than those presented in previous versions of the code. The main research objective is to derive a main program to make a complete design for a steel plate girder bridge with its main components according to Egyptian code of practice “ASD” and “LRFD”.STUDY PROCEDURES:In present study, Program is built using the Visual C# language and Excel spreadsheets to produce what the designers need from the codes in a short clear method. The thesis includes a comparison between the two Egyptian design methods “Allowable Stress Design” (ASD) and “Load and Resistance Factor Design” (LRFD). The relation between the different parameters of the two methods is studied to understand which method of design is suitable and more economic. Moreover, design charts are obtained, which assist engineers to design a wide range of steel bridge elements and get the most economic one. These charts are simple and easy to use.Conclusions: This study introduced a computer program for design of steel plate girder roadway bridges according to the two Egyptian codes Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). By this program design charts are presented, some design notes are suggested which may be included in Egyptian steel codes. This program gives economic designs in no time. Based on the presented program many factors are believed to have an influence on the design results, these factors are (loads combination and load factors, steel and concrete material properties, total bridge layout (spans, continuity, layout of stiffeners and spacing between cross beams). |
