Abstract

Medical consultations related to penis size are very common at pediatric, andrology, urology and endocrinology clinics because this issue has a significant medical, sexual, psychological and social relevance. Additionally, there is a great interest in normal reference values in relation to the growth and development of the human penis both for patients and medical professional.
Determination of penile size is employed clinically in the evaluation of children with abnormal genital development, such as micropenis, that is normal in terms of shape and function, but is more than 2.5 standard deviations (SD) smaller than mean size in terms of length.
The present study aims to measure SPL in prepubertal boys at different ages in Minia. It had been conducted on 1000 prepubertal males. The age of the boys ranged from one day till 13 years. The boys were classified into 16 age groups; each contains boys, from either urban or rural areas, to establish a reference range for penile length for each age group and detect the relation of penis length with age, weight and length.
SPL was measured by using a ruler with millimeters markings along the dorsum of the penis by compressing suprapubic fat tissue with one end of the ruler, then penis was fully stretched. The distance from pupopenile junction to the tip of the glans was measured and recorded.
The obtained results showed that SPL increases gradually with age starting from early infancy as the range was 2.6 - 8.1 cm. The differences between the different age groups as regarding the SPL show significant statistical differences between most of the groups.
As regarding body weight and body length there were a high significant statistical correlation between each of them and the SPL where the p value was < 0.001.
This work indicate that the recognition of normal range of penile length is important in children so parents must be aware with the normal penile growth of the prepubertal children as the period of infancy can be used as diagnostic window to establish the diagnosis of hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism or testicular failure.
The early detection and treatment of micropenis is important, as the penis is testosterone dependant, where the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis is activated during the first months of life, So the testosterone therapy of micropenis in infancy and childhood has been found to increase the penile length up to normal range of age.
Our data may serve as an updated reference for normal penile length in Egyptian boys from birth up to 13 years old.
