Abstract In this research the amount of sterilization using sunlight was estimated for drinking water stored in polyethylene terephtalate (PET) plastic bottles, as well as estimating the amount of disintegration of (PET) plastic bottles to the water stored under different values of temperature and pH values . In the first part of the research sterilized drinking water was brought in several (PET) bottles with different characteristics and different concentrations of pollution microbial cells were injected into the (PET) bottles (E. coli cells from sewage). The second part of the research focused on the disintegration from (PET) plastic bottles due the exposure to sunlight and other environmental effects such as(high temperatures, PH, the length of storage periods of the (PET) plastic bottles, and direct and indirect exposure to sunlight). This research is considered one of the first researches dealing with such things that concerns a lot of people and implementing its results on the practical field is highly valued and widely spread as it sends a clear message to numerous people who are involved in this field that solar energy can be used to sterilize the water provided that the storage period doesn’t exceed the critical one mentioned above and that exceeding the critical storage period leads to several consequences such as: The disintegration/migration of some of the particles from the(PET) plastic bottles into the water which causes a noticeable change in the water’s taste in addition to other secondary consequences. |
