Abstract

Calcium silicate, CaSiO3, such as wollastonite, pseudowollastonite and their composites are attracting interest as one of the most active bioceramics for bone implants and other biomedical applications. The current goals in biomaterials research focus on synthesis and developing calcium silicate structures with improved characteristics to meet biomedical applications. At present, wollastonite, pseudowollastonite, and HAp/β-wollastonite composites powders prepared by the available techniques which depends on solid state reaction or wet chemical methods have some major drawbacks. The present thesis demonstrated a simple and economic route to prepare two forms of calcium silicate with different crystalline phases, α- and β-wollastonite, by heating the reactant solution at 100 °C for 2 h before sintering. The low temperature phase β-wollastonite formed at 800 °C with mean particle size in the range 2-7μm and high temperature phase α-wollastonite formed at 1200°C with mean particle size in the range 2-7μm. These results indicated that this method and synthesized materials are promising for medical applications such as bone repair substitutes and drug carriers.
