Abstract

W
orldwide, colorectal cancer has the third and fourth highest incidence and the fifth and fourth highest mortality in females and males, respectively. Despite advances made, the efficacy of therapy has reached a plateau, making early diagnosis fundamental to reduce morbidity and mortality, especially as it is known that patients diagnosed at early stages show long-term survival.
This study was carried out in Ain Shams University Hospitals. A total of 70 patients came to internal medicine clinic complaining of lower gastrointestinal symptoms as chronic diarrhea, bleeding per rectum, chronic lower abdominal pain, etc, colonoscopy was indicated, and according to colonoscopy results, they were divided into three groups :
Group one: Includes twenty five patients with different non malignant colonic lesions, 16 males, and 9 females with mean age 40-43y.
Group two: Includes twenty five patients with proved colonic cancer, 15 males, and 10 females with mean age 12-51y .
Group three: Includes twenty individuals, 13 males, and 7 females with mean age 40-45y.
The aim of this work was to test the effectiveness of using K Ras mutation testing as screening method for premalignant stage in different colonic lesions.
When assessing K- Ras mutation as screening test, comparing results between group (2) and group (3). It was found that sensitivity of k-ras is 92% and specificity is 65%. while when comparing the results between group (1) and group (2), sensitivity was 60% ,and specificity 65%. But when comparing groups (1),(2) with group (3), sensitivity was 76% and specificity was 65%.
