Abstract
Discovery of new important natural products takes place when new screening programs are carried out or when samples from new sources are examined. In our program, samples were collected from different locations. All samples were pretreated with heating that allowed selective isolation of actinomycetes which are normally rare or present in a few cells. Forty different strains of actinomycetes were isolated, of which only twenty-four isolates were exhibited antagonistic activity against Candida albicans or/and Escherichia coli.To test the non polyenic antifungal activity, the actinomycetes which exhibited antifungal activity were antagonized against C. albicans in the presence and absence of ergosterol. Out of 19 actinomycetes with antifungal activity, only five showed a non polyenic activity where their antifungal activities did not affected in the presence of ergosterol.Among the actinomycetes with a non polyenic antifungal activity, isolate No.4 was the most active one against the test organism. Thus it was selected for further investigation,characterization and identification.
