Abstract Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a common chemotherapy and immunosuppressive agent used for the treatment of a wide range of neoplastic and some auto-immune diseases. Chemotherapeutic studies using CP have shown that in spite of the increased successes in cancer treatment, it has a lot of side effects in cancer survivors. Spirulina (Sp) platensis, a blue - green algae, has been demonstrated as an antioxidant and antiapoptotic in many in vitro and in vivo studies. Experimental studies found that Sp alone or in combination with other vitamins or minerals is effective in minimizing the side effects caused by CP. Therefore, the present work aimed at studying the side effects of CP in ovary, bone marrow and bladder of normal mice and trying to alleviate these side effects by Sp extract. 100 BALB/C mice were been used in the present study and divided into 10 groups. Red bood cells (RBCs) count, white blood cells (WBCs) count, platelet count, and heamoglobin (Hb) concentration were estimated, also , serum erythropiotein (EPO), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2) concentration beside total white blood cells in bone marrow and serum Zn and Se were estimated. Light microscope examinations of the ovaries of all mice were carried out using staining with hematoxylin and eosin. from results it is apparent that oral ingestion of Spirulina platensis can alleviate many side effects of CP when used as a chemotherapeutic agent in experimental animals. The power of alleviating these side effects is more beneficial at high doses of Sp particularly when given before CP. Whether these findings are applicable to humans using CP needs further research. However, Sp can be recommended as a food supplement to alleviate many side effects of many drugs and to stimulate the immune system of drugs uses. |
