Abstract Metabolic syndrome is an important public health concern that predisposes individuals to the development of CVD and/or T2DM. It is a clustering of various interrelated risk factors of .metabolic origin including central obesity, IR, IGT, dyslipidemia, endothelial dysfunction and hypertension (Onat, 2011). There is yet no substantial strategy for treatment of MetSyn and the effective single therapy is still unattainable. This thesis was devoted to investigate the potential therapeutic effectiveness of curcumin, the active constituent of the plant turmeric, in comparison with the oral antidiabetic agent, metformin which is extensively used in treatment of MetSyn, in FFR model of MetSyn. In this study, a MetSyn-like state was induced by feeding rats with fructose (10 %) in drinking water for 8 weeks. Throughout the study, two dose levels of each of curcumin (40 and 80 mg/kg) and metformin (100 and 200 mg/kg) were administered daily orally either solely or in two combinations. |
