Abstract

There are important reasons why the researcher should be concerned with job satisfaction. The first is that people deserve to be treated fairly and with respect. Job satisfaction is to some extent a reflection of good treatment.
It can also be considered as an indicator of emotional well-being or physiological health. The second reason is that job satisfaction can lead to behaviour of employees that affects organizational functioning. Furthermore, job satisfaction can be a reflection of organizational functioning. Differences among organizational units in job satisfaction can be diagnostic of potential trouble spots (Spector, 1997).
Physician career satisfaction appears to be a complex function of a number of variables and has multiple dimensions. The data on physician satisfaction cannot be fully understood without examining the principal domains determining physician career satisfaction (Landon, 2004).
The study aims to identify socio-demographic characteristics and work circumstances of the resident physicians at Assiut University Hospitals, to identify the prevalence of job satisfaction and explain its main components among resident physicians at Assiut University Hospitalsand to identify the relationships between socio-demographic characteristics, job characteristics and job satisfaction.
Job satisfaction has five facets, which can be put together to measure a Job Descriptive Index (JDI) which are The work itself, Quality of supervision: Relationships with co-workers Promotion opportunities and Pay:
According to the literature, job satisfaction in health care organizations is related to many factors: optimal work arrangements; the possibility to participate actively in the decision-making process; effective communication among staff and supervisors and to be able to express freely one’s opinion. Collective problem solving and the attitude of management are also important to the satisfaction of the employees (Love, 1977; Kivimaki et al., 1994; Freeborn and Hooker, 1995)
The study area was Assiut University Hospitals which is considered one of the largest educational and therapeutic university hospitals in Arab Republic of Egypt.
The design of the study was descriptive cross sectional based on self administered questionnaire.
The number of resident physicians at Assiut University hospitals is 400. Total coverage of all resident physicians was attempted however, 332 questionnaires were completed yielding a response rate 83%.
The main finding that emerged from the study was that 62.7 % of the resident physicians were satisfied in general and 37.3 % weren’t satisfied in general.
The satisfaction of resident physicians were due to The chance to work alone on the job(68.1%), the freedom to use my own judgment(65.7%) and then the chance to do things for other people (63.6%) .
The very dissatisfaction were due to the pay and the amount of work (30.1%) and then was due to being able to keep busy all the time (29.8%)
It shows the degrees of satisfaction which is arranged in five degrees from very dissatisfied to very satisfied .
The greatest degree of dissatisfaction was 30.1 % and it was related to the pay and the amount of work and then was 29.8 % and it was related to being able to keep busy all the time.
As regard The greatest degree of satisfaction it was 68.1 % and it was related to The chance to work alone on the job and then 65.7 % and it was related to The freedom to use my own judgment.
