Abstract

This study aimed to : Study The performance of sesame cultivars on seed germination characters and seedlings parameters. The effect of salinity stress on seed germination characters and seedlings parameters. The effect of the interaction between cultivars and salinity stress on seed germination characters and seedlings parameters. Methods and Results:The experiment was arranged in factorial experiment in Randomized Complete Block Design in Giza Seed Testing Laboratory to study the response of germination characters and seedling performance of some sesame cultivars to salinity concentrations. Fifty seeds of uniform size in each treatment for each cultivar were germinated on a filter paper in 9 cm diameter Petri dishes in four replicates and moistened with salinity concentrations in a growth chamber at 20 – 25оC for 8 days. The results showed a significant effect of studied sesame cultivars on averages of all studied characters. The highest averages of these characters were produced from sown Toshka 1 cultivar followed by Shandaweel 3 cultivar while, the lowest values of these characters were produced from sown Sohag 1 cultivar. On contrary, highest averages of seedling height reduction were produced from sown Sohag 1 cultivar. Concerning salinity concentrations effect, the results showed a significant effect on averages of all studied characters. Increasing salinity levels from 0, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17 and 20 dSm-1 NaCl reduced all studied characters except seedling height reduction which was increasing. The results showed that all studied characters significantly affected the interaction between cultivars and salinity concentrations. The highest values of these characters was produced from the control and salinity level of 5 dSm-1 NaCl with sown Shandaweel 3 or Toshka 1 cultivars. Whereas, the highest percentages of seedling height reduction were produced from sown Giza 32 or Sohag 1 cultivars under highest salinity level of 20 dSm-1 NaCl without significant differences between them. Conclusion:It could be concluded that for maximizing sesame germination characters and seedling parameters under salinity stress. It could be achieves by sown Toshka 1 or Shandaweel 3 with increasing salinity concentrations levels up to 8 dSm-1 NaCl. These cultivars were more tolerant to salinity and recommended to use in breeding program for enhancing sesame production in Egypt.
