Abstract

Two experiments were conducted in Fish Research Center - Suez Canal University: the first experiment aimed to study the effect of addition of 0.3% formic acid and 0.3% potassium diformate (KDF) comparing with control diet on growth performance, feed utilization and economic analysis of monosex Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) fingerlings. The experiment was lasted for 84 days. The results of first experiment indicated that the best increase in final body weight, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency (FE), feed intake (FI), protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein retention efficiency (PRE) and highest survival rate was in the third group (0.3% KDF), followed by groups 2 and 1, respectively. According to the results of the first experiment, the second experiment aimed to investigate the effect of addition three levels of potassium diformate (KDF) (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5%) in addition to control diet on growth performance, feed utilization and economic analysis of monosex Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) fingerlings. The experiment was lasted for 84 days. The results of second experiment indicated that the best increase in final body weight, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency (FE), feed intake (FI), protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein retention efficiency (PRE) and highest survival rate was in the third group (0.3% KDF), followed by groups 4, 2 and 1, respectively.
It could be concluded that the best group of fish fed on potassium diformate (KDF) (0.3%) in terms of growth performance, feed utilization and economic analysis under the present study.
Key Words Formic acid, potassium diformate, growth performance, feed utilization, Nile tilapia fingerlings.
