Abstract

thesis is entitled ”THE ARTS IN EGYPT IN THE EARLY
BYZANTINE ERA”. The Art is the greatest language which is taken by the man
as a way to express what is inside, through the in touched elements. The ancient
Egyptian art was considered one of the most glorious arts among the ancient
civilizations, and its artistic production has gained a fertile soil for the various
arts, till it reached a high degree of highness that impressed the whole world.
When tracing the artistic production in Egypt in different eras, it is found that
the Egyptian character survived along its history, despite what has been faced
from invasions and occupation, as one can find that the artist has not given up
his identity so that the invaders were affected by the Egyptians, and not vice
versa.
With the succession of ages, till reaching the Coptic era which was
characterized by its different circumstances that differentiate its work from the
other works. It suffered the persecution under the Roman rule in the presence of
a new religion that was strange on them. But in spite of that the Egyptian sole
still found and this will be our point of focus in this research. The Coptic art
appeared under hard circumstances, suffered the persecution during its early
time which tried to demolish its features, which led the man to tend to what is
surround as his tendency to the nature and taking from elements ( plant, animal,
birds elements) its main symbolism, to be taken as a secret language between
them, that couldn’t be known by the ruling category, and this was the beginning
of the use of (Symbolism in Coptic art), which helped a lot in its survival for a
long period of time.
This hard situation stayed till the reign of the emperor Constantine and
after him Theodosius, till the confession by the christian religion and taking it
as the official religion of the country. from this point was the beginning of the
appearance of what was known by the “Coptic art”. This art which was one of
the main rings that connecting the chain of the Egyptian history. This art which
was formed by the Egyptians in the Nile valley that was characterized by its
public spirit, as it took its main features from the public in contrast with the
Egyptian art which was the art of the ruling category.
