Abstract

The objective of study was to examine the effects of supplemental dietary vit E, Se or vit. E+Se on growth, reproductive performance, lipid peroxidation, antioxidative status and immune response in growing and laying Japanese quail under heat stress. A total of 576 21-day-old Japanese quail chicks were randomly divided into 8 experimental treatments under thermo-neutral condition : (1) control (basal diet without any supplementation of vit. E or Se); (2) vit. E (basal diet +200 mg α-tocopherol acetate/ kg diet); (3) Se (basal diet + 0.3 mg organic Se/ kg diet); and (4) vit. E+ Se (basal diet +200 mg α-tocopherol acetate/ kg diet + 0.3 mg organic Se/ kg diet) and the same treatments under heat stress. Finally, it could be concluded that dietary organic Se in combination with Vit E has a synergestic action in minimizing lipid peroxidation in blood plasma and maximizing the antioxidant defense system, which probably translates into enhanced growth performance, muscle integrity, immunity and disease resistance in growing Japanese quail. Getting such positive results is vital, especially under commercial production conditions and compared with the high ambient environmental temperature during the hot summer season of Egypt.
