Research Extract
Analytical Study of the Symphonic Poem ”La Mer ”
For Claude Debussy
Programme Music is a kind of musical compositions, where the composer tries to inspire the listener with a certain dialogue like a poem, an autobiography , or a story the programme Music first appeared in Madrigalt in the 16th century in Johann related to well-known tales from the Old Testament. The French Clavecin School also tried to depiet the sounds of animals and birds in musical compositions. It also appeared in the names Joseph Hayden (1732-1809) gave to his symphonies. Like
”The Clock” .Ludweg Beethoven (1770-1827), in his turn, called his sixth symphony .
”The pastoral”Mendelson (1809- 1847) also composed the ltalic symphony as programme music.Tanks to Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) that the programme music was more realistically transcribed, which paved the way for liszt (1811-1886) to remove interludes between symphonic movements, leading to what is known as the symphonic poem . This is a composition of one movement in which is inner divisions are tied up with a theme that continuously appears in lots of variations On the other hand Berlioz had a great effect on Richard Wagner (1813-1883). This aroused his interest in introducing the element of musical drama in his works.
The symphonic poem had prospered in the second half the 19th century till the beginning of the 20th century. It gained agreat deal of composers’ interests in several countries .
Cesar Franck(1822-1890) and Saint Saens (1835-1921) are of the composers of the symphonic poem in France .Claud Debussy (1862-1918) is a leading impressionist who appeared in 1874. This is a doctrine that cares for the out-come of the passing moment and the effect sight impressions can have. ”Nocturnes” is one of Debussy’s most important symphonic poems in 1899 in addition to ”La Mer” in 1905 and ” Images” in 1912.
The research includes four chapters which the researcher dealt with as follows:
Chapter One:(This includes two themes):
The lst Theme : The research problem: Here , the researcher presented the introduction, the research problem, its aims its importance, the research inquiries, its limits proceduresm tools samples and its technical terms.
The 2nd Theme : The previous studies related to the research topic
1st axis: The studies which were interested in the symphonic poem and programme music.
2nd axis : The studies which were interested in Dubssy’ work
Chapter Two: the theoretical framework
The 1st Theme : 1- The romantic age and the beginning of 20th century
2- dispersing romanticism
3- The 20th century most important refrains .
4- The characteristics of the 20th century music
The 2nd theme : The symphonic poem (its definition - its origin – its improrement)
The 3th Theme : Claude Achille Debussy (his life- the –the characteristics of his style – the compositions and stages of Debussy’s innovation)
Chapter three : applied framework
This includes general and detailed analytical study of Claud achille Debussy’s symphonic poem ”La Mer”
-The first part (from sunset till noon on the ocean or ”De L’ aube a midi sur la Mer”)
-The second part (the waves or ”Jeus de vagues” .
-The third part (a dialogue between the wind and the sea or ”Dialogue du vent et De la Mer”
Chapter Four (The research conclusions and recommendations)
This chapter includes a display of the conclusions and interpretations. The researcher offered suggestions and recommendations. Then came the research appendixes and a list of the Arabic and foreign references followed by the research appendixes and abstract Arabic and English.
The Research Conclusions:
The research conclusions replied to the inquiries the researcher supposed.
The Research Recommendations :
After displaying the conclusions the study resulted in, the researcher recommends the following:
- The importance of paying due care to Debussy’s compositions and including them in the analytical curriculum of world music of the post studies in specific education faculties
- Encouraging the students of theories and composition departments to make use of Debussy’s style in orchestration.
- Daying due care to teaching programme music and analyzing universal and Arab programme works which reflect the effect of other arts on music and needs the composer to employ music element to serve the programme depict dramatic events.
- Inviting young Egyptian and Arab composer to pay interest to this kind of music composition for its role in achieving social effects and depicting human subject.
