Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease with an insidious onset and progressive but slow decline. The hallmark symptoms are memory loss, impairment of daily activities, and neurobehavioral abnormalities.(1) AD is not a normal part of aging.(2)
The Alzheimer’s Society estimates that, in people over 65 years, 1 in 14 affected by AD. The risk increases with age, People over 80 years have one in six chance of developingAD.(3) The prevalence of AD doubles every 5 years after the age of 60 increasing from 1% among those 60 to 64 years old to up to 40% of those aged 85 years and older.(4)
Dementia affects around 570,000 people in England, Alzheimer’s disease responsible for around 60% of dementia cases.(3) Dementia in people under 65 years of age, known as early-onset dementia, is less common .(3)
The prevalence of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia in people Aged ≥65 years is 1.6% in Africa, 3.9% in eastern Europe, 4.0% in China, 5.4% in western Europe and 6.4% in North America.(5) 5.3 million Americans of all ages have AD. 5.1 million aged 65 and older.(6) Alzheimer’s Association estimates that there are 500,000 Americans younger than 65 with AD and other dementias. (6) In 2000, there were 411,000 new cases of AD. In 2010, that number projected to 454,000 new cases; by 2030, 615,000; and 959,000 by 2050.(6)
In Finland, the prevalence of MCI was 6.1%, In Germany, the prevalence was 3.1%.(7) In Canadia the prevalence was 3.0%.(7) In Brazil, 18.9% .(7) In India, 14.9%.(7) In 2021, approximately 8.3 million adults with AD will be living in the seven major markets: (US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and UK).(7) In Italy was 4.9% . (8) 5% of Saudi population living with Alzheimer’s and expected to increase to 13% over the next seven years.(9)
