Abstract During the past decade and especially in periods where the energy prices were increasing drastically, many ideas on new utilizations of well-known by - products arose. In the same period there has been an explosion in ideas of new biotechnological processes. These two trends have influenced the literature conce- rning utilization of bagasse and beet pulp. So far, there has mainly been focussed on processes converting bagasse and beet into useful products such as ethanol, single cell protein and certain organic solvents. All these compounds at a rather low price are sold in large quantities and are not normally sold by a sugar producer. All the processes are involving a rather high level of technological knowledge. In Egypt, surplus amounts of beet pulp come out from the newly operated factory of the Delta Sugar Company for the production of sugar from sugar beet. As this industry is in progress, the significant quantities of this available material inspired the author to study in a systematic way- the possibility of its utilization for the fermentative production of fuel. |
