Abstract The brackish water shallow lakes lying at the north- ern periphery of the Nile Delta, namely; Lake Menzalah,L. Burollus, L. Edku and L. Mariut form the most important fishery grounds in Egypt, since they yield collectively about 50-60% of the total fish catch of the country (Fishery statistical report, 1982). The total surface area of these lakes ea lc ula ted from Land sa t Sa telli te imagery amo un ted to 37),6)0 Feddans divided as follows : L. Menzalah 215,440 Feddans, L. Burollus 114,520 Feddans, L. Edku 27,470 Feddans and L. Mariut 16,240 Feddans (Reid and Rawntree, 1982).
