Abstract

Intussusception is telescoping of the intestine into itself. It is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain in children under 5 years of age. The present study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of fluoroscopic-guided pneumatic reduction as a line of treatment of infantile intussusception in Pediatric Surgery Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University. This aim was achieved through defining the success rate of the procedure, arriving at the factors influencing the outcome of the procedure and identifying the possible complications.
In this prospective study, a total of 30 pediatric patients diagnosed with intussusception were included in the study as a comprehensive sample. Patients with suspected perforation or peritonitis were excluded from the study.
All patients involved in this study were properly resuscitated prior to attempts of reduction. Air was insufflated to a pressure of between 80-120mmHg. Progression of reduction of the intussusceptum was assessed using intermittent fluoroscopic screening.
Of the 30 patients with attempted pneumatic reduction; 22 patients were reduced successfully with air enema and didn’t need any further management. The overall success rate was 73.3%.
No mentionable complications were recorded during trial of pneumatic reduction in all 30 cases included in the study.
