Abstract

Imagine a city where everything is interconnected and in constant communication with one another, from electricity, water, waste management, transport, buildings and the health system; A real-time, physical, self-correcting internet functioning reliably, sustainably and in accordance with the highest standard of living. Now imagine all these systems talking to one another, exchanging information, making smart decisions, all in a sustainable, scalable, flexible, comfortable and highly efficient model. This is the vision of a Smart City. The smart city concept was born two decades ago to address emerging city sustainability issues, and was mainly focused on energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. More recently the term was attached to the role of ICTs infrastructure. This research agenda is focused on analyzing the design and implementation of concrete projects for smart cities around the world, also analyzing the current state of Alexandria city regarding the smart projects available. The thesis is divided into three main parts: The First Part ”Smart City Infrastructure and Initiatives” Which is focused on the Smart City concept, the importance of unified ICT platform, Smart City infrastructure monitoring, Future Internet and its fundamental pillars, and then moved to illustrate the main systems and initiatives which can be applied in different cities to make them smart. The Second Part ”Smart City Profiles”: Presents the distinctions between initiatives aimed at the transformation of existing old cities around the world into smart ones, and initiatives looking at ways to improve design, construction and operation of new cities. This is done by examining some examples for smart new cities and old cities becoming smart. The Third Part ”Alexandria Smart City Framework”: In this part the current situation of Egypt regarding its ICT infrastructure will be examined, also the smart services available in Alexandria, then presenting a strategy for transforming Alexandria into a Smart City. Consequently the research traces the relation between information and communication technologies infrastructure, and Smart City solutions, and then examines smart cities profiles whether old or new ones and projects they implement in order to be smart cities. Finally; the research analyses Alexandria status regarding its ICT infrastructure and digital services.
