Abstract

Scholastic underachievement is considered a major problem that faces students, parents and teachers. The increasing numbers of underachievers all over the world drove the attention to study different causes of this problem . CAPD is one of the most important causes. Accordingly, this work was design in an attempt to determine the prevalence of CAPD among primary school children with underachievement in Sharkia governorate.
This research was applied to 51 children with scholastic underachievement with an age range from 8-12 years. They were selected from two primary schools. The selection criteria based on failure in one or more of school subjects in the mid or final terms exams. The prevalence of those under achievers was 7.4% out of the total number of children in the two schools (681).
Eight children were excluded from the study (six children with low IQ that they could not understand the test, one child with uncorrected visual problem did not continue and one child did not perform testing from the start). Thus the total number of children how continue the evaluation was only 43 children.
The examination of these children was conducted at school and the remaining part was at the clinic. Questionnaires for CAPD, history taking and psychometric evaluation were conducted at the school. At the clinic, children were examined in two separate sessions. The first session included ophthalmological, neurological examination, basic audiological evaluation and part of central auditory processing testing which included low pass filtered test, speech intelligibility in noise test and training for pitch pattern sequence test. The second session included Pitch pattern sequence test, dichotic digits test and memory tests.
The equipment used in this study were questionnaires for CAPD; two channel audiometer, Madsen, model Orbiter 922 connected to 2 channel cassette; Immittancemeter, model Amplaid 724; tapes of Arabic central auditory processing test battery for children developed by Soliman et al.(1995); Picture intelligence test (Saleh, 1978) and Snellen’s chart .
The results of this study revealed that the prevalence of CAPD in the studied children with scholastic underachievement in Sharkia governorate was 76%. This prevalence was considered higher in comparison to other causes of underachievement. Mental retardation and visual problems form a lower prevalence (12% and 2%) respectively. No reported cases of neurological or peripheral hearing loss.
Children with CAPD revealed disabilities affecting mainly the auditory memory ability followed by the temporal sequence ability, and to lesser extend the auditory integration ability. The auditory closure and the selective attention abilities were the least to be affected.
