Abstract

Safe pain control methods after cesarean section is a great challenge for
medical team because the spread use of drugs can cause side effects. Non
pharmacological measures are safer with less side effects than
pharmacological measures. This study aimed to determine the
effectiveness of lavender oil on relieving post cesarean pain. A Quasi-
experimental design was adopted in the current study. The study was
conducted at the postpartum unit in Suez-Canal University Hospital during
the period from October 2013 to January 2014. A sample of convenience
including 100 mothers was divided into two groups (study and control).
Three tools were used for data collection, socio demographic
questionnaire, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Modified Johansson Pain-
O-Meter (MJPOM). The study group inhaled lavender oil and the control
group received placebo. Results of the study showed highly statistically
significant differences in pain intensity between the groups understudy
(p<0.001), lavender oil was more effective with educated mothers and
multiparous mothers. Conclusion; Lavender oil is a successful and safe
complementary therapy in reducing pain after cesarean section. Results of
the current study recommended that further studies to be carried out to
apply lavender oil on a larger sample and from different geographical areas
to generalize the results.
