Abstract Polypropylene (PP) is widely used in applications as in the packaging, textile, and rope industries. It has a number of advantages that make it an ideal material for the manufacture of a vast range of items. Polypropylene fib er (PPF) used as a partial replacement for glass fiber. However, its applications as an engineering thermoplastic is somewhat limited due to its relatively poor mechanical properties, but the PP fibers have some advantages such as low cost, low density, and high ductility. The main objective of the present work is to manufacture a PPFI polyester composite laminate using the hand lay up technique with total fiber volume fraction of 30.28 % and total thickness (6.2 ±0.05) mm. Also, to study the tensile, in-plane shear, bending, hardness, and the impact behaviors of the PPFI polyester composite laminates. Classical Lamination Theory (CLT) was used to determine the elastic properties such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, shear modulus of PPF/polyester composite. The In-plane shear behavior of PPF/polyester composites was investigated using Iosipescu test, whilst the bending characteristics have been studied using the four point bending test. Also, the impact properties have been studied by the traditional impact - testing using the notched Izod impact test. The Rockwell hardness of the fabricated composites have been also measured and recorded. |
