Abstract

The present work deals with uranium extraction from the ore obtained from north eastern of El-Fayum depression. The study area is located at 66Km from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis. This area covers about 1 km2 between longitudes 30o, 38o to 30o 46o east and longitudes 29o 42o to 25o 47o north.
Uranium leaching from El-Fayum ore has been studied using sulfuric acid. The effect of different parameters on the leaching process such as; ore particle size, sulfuric acid concentration, liquid to solid ratio, reaction time and temperature were investigated. The obtained results clarify that uranium leaching efficiency was 78% under the following conditions; ore ≤ 160 µm particle size with 2 M sulfuric acid at acid/ore ratio of 3:1 for 15 minutes at 25oC.
The leaching kinetics of uranium from El-Fayum rock using dilute sulfuric acid has been investigated. The influence of H2SO4 concentration, liquid/ solid ratio, particle size and temperature were studied in order to expound the dissolution kinetic of El-Fayum rock. The kinetic data show that the leaching process can be described by a shrinking-core model and leaching rate was controlled by the diffusion of reactants through a porous ore. The apparent activation energy is about 10.33 kJ/ mol.
Uranium extraction from sulfate leach liquor acid by D2EHPA & TOPO mixture in kerosene was investigated. The effect of different factors affecting the extraction mechanism such as sulfate leach liquor acid, D2EHPA and TOPO concentrations, and temperature have been studied. The mathematical treatment for the obtained date suggested that the composition of synergistic extraction species is (UO2(D)2T). The logarithm of the apparent equilibrium constant, logKex, of synergistic extraction reaction has been evaluated, to be 3.22 ± 0.12. The effect of temperature on extraction process was investigated and the apparent values of the thermodynamics parameters (∆H, ∆G, and ∆S) were 38.2 KJ/mol, -19.1 KJ/mol, and 192.5 KJ/mol respectively.
