Abstract Twenty-four lignocellulose-degrading actinomycetes were selectively isolated and studied their lignocellulolytic activities. Results showed that xylanase activity was the highest among the isolates followed by cellulase and lignin peroxidase. The ability of isolates for sugar production from lignocellulose degradation was examined and the highest sugar yield was 4.5mg/g using Streptomyces variabilis. Five chemical pretreatments and three different post-pretreatments were applied to enhance the sugar production. Results showed that separation of chemical was of chemical was essential in acids and ammonia pretreatment, while alkali can be used as a mineral salt by actinomycete during the hydrolysis without needing to separate from the biomass. Yeasts were isolated and tested for their ability to produce ethanol. The highest ethanol yield was 30% using Candida tropicalis. |
