Abstract Our observations in Down syndrome blood lymphocytes treated with melatonin in vitro are important with regard to free radical scavenging and genome protection. Since melatonin is not foreign to the human body, these results should provide impetus for further research leading to the use of melatonin, and the biological activity of this endogenously synthesized pineal hormone, in protection of the genome from natural and other DNA damaging agents. |
