Abstract Background : Constipation is a common problem worldwide, increased age, female sex and lower level of education are risk factors for the development of constipation. chronic constipation is difficult to diagnose because it is a symptom rather than a disease. People who suffer from chronic constipation have been found to have a poorer quality of life when compared to people without a chronic gastrointestinal disorder. Many patients incorrectly believe that they need to have a bowel movement every day. So, the Gerontological nurse should start nursing management with assessment of elderly lifestyle, knowledge and plan for how to increase elders knowledge about chronic constipation and health- related lifestyle. Aim: Determine the effect of lifestyle modification interventions to overcome chronic constipation among community dwelling older adults. Materials and Methods: The study included (100) older adult patients aged 60 years and above. have chronic constipation for at least one year. The subjects were divided into two groups (50) subjects each, one experimental and one control group, selected from the outpatient clinics at the Specialized Medical Hospital, Mansoura University. Egypt. Data was collected using seven tools and were collected during a period of 10 months (from the beginning of October 2012 until the end of July of 2013). |
