Abstract

Since the early Egyptians, great attention has been paid for
the establishment of new settlements, land projects and
preservation of our land_ For these purposes, favorable effort
has been given in several integrated fields of study_ As Egypt is
essentially a desert land (about 97% ), great consideration is
given for ita reclamation and use_ In the last two decades,
studies have been conducted in the fields of geology,
hydrogeology, pedology and geophysics for selected Egyptian desert
areas by several governmental organizations and private sectors_
These have been done to secure proper evaluation of new
settlements_ Example of these around Cairo are the ”Tenth of
Ramadan” and ”El-Salhiya” cities to the east of the Nile Delta,
and others around Cairo_ This east delta province needs among
others, evaluation for ita groundwater potentialities_ This
naturally would have its importance on any forthcoming
development of the province_
The area selected for the present investigation is
comparatively less studied in this respect_ It comprises part of
the desert area to the east of the Nile Delta and covers about
530Km~ (Fig_1)_ This area is bounded northward by Gebel Hamza ridge
0 (LaL 30 15 N } and southward by Gebel Sawanet El-Dibba ridge
(Lat_ 30° 6 N), it is limited by wadi Moftah and wadi El- Gafra
in the east (Long_ 31° 40, to 31° 45, E ) , and its western
part is bounded by the Cairo
and Gebel EL-Asfar area (Long_
International Airport,
31° 24, to 31’” 20 E)-
As to its accessibility, the area is crossed by
EL-Khanka
the Cairo-
Suez railways and by paved roads as Cairo-Ismailiya, Cairo-Genifa,
Belbeis and Cairo-Suez desert roads as well as several desert
tracks_
