Abstract

The study’ aim was to determine the effect of bowel educational intervention on preventing constipation among Immobilized patients. Subjects and methods: Quasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study to achieve the aim of this study . The study was carried out at orthopedic and Neurologic Department of Menofia University Hospital, Egypt. Subjects oF this study were compromised of 100 immobilized patients divided alternatively and randomly into two equal groups, 50 patients for each group; Study group (I) were received a bowel educational intervention along with the routine hospital care. Control group (II) were received the routine hospital care only. Tools: Three tools were utilized for data collection. Tool I:Structured interview questionnaire, tool II: Physical examination of abdomen and tool III: Constipation Scoring System. Results: revealed that the mean age for group I and group II were 36.82 ± 13.5, 33.72 ± 11.46 respectively. The majority of study and control groups were male and married. There were no significant difference was existed in knowledge and constipation score between both study and control group while statistically significant differences were existed among study group compared to control group post intervention. Conclusions: No statistically significant differences concerning patients’ knowledge and constipation score were existed between study and control groups on admission while statistically significant differences were found between both study and control group after two weeks.Recommendation: A manual booklet should be available and distributed for each immobilized patients, with colored pictures about constipation and ways to prevent it. Applying this program for any immobilized patients and their caregivers to help them to prevent constipation.
