Abstract

The study involved 30 patients with primary hepatic tumors (with Child A classification fit for surgical intervention) managed by hepatic resection at National Liver Institute, Menofeya university during the period from January 2010 to August 2012. The patients randomly divided into 2 groups, Group A (15 patients) managed with open hepatic resection technique and Group B (15 patients) managed with laparoscopic hepatic resection technique. The median patient age in open group was 53.33 ranged between 26-72 years, while the laparoscopic group was 51.8 ranged between 36-61 years with no statistical differences. There was 13 males (86.67%) and 2 females (13.33%) in the open group and 10 males (66.67%) and 5 females (33.33%) in the laparoscopic group. There were a 13 cases in each group diagnosed to have hepatitis C and were Child-Paugh, Class A with good general condition fit for operation. 2 patients in each group were hepatitis C –ve with normal laboratory values. The median Alpha fetoprotein level in open group was 84.08 ng/ml ranging between 6 and 400 ng/ml, while the median level in laparoscopic group was 62.63 ng/ml ranging between 5.1 and 280 ng/ml.
