Abstract Umbilical cord blood contains haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells that have proven useful clinically to reconstitute the haematopoietic system in children and some adults in need of transplantation. UCBT is now widely used to treat several malignant and non malignant disorders, including acute and chronic leukemia, lymphomas, various solid tumors, and immune deficiencies, inborn errors of metabolism, marrow failure disorders and genetic diseases. Cord blood can be collected at birth using a sterile collection kit either in-utero or ex-utero from normal deliveries and caesarean sections with no pain for the mother or the child. UCBT continues to increase and needs to meet several new challenges. |
