Abstract

Hepatitis C virus is a major public health problem and principal cause of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, steatosis, carcinoma and liver transplantation. It is the main cause of a very high morbidity and mortality and one of the top five leading causes of death in Egypt. Nutrition has been recognized as a prognostic and therapeutic determinant in patients with chronic liver disease. The effect on nutritional status depends on the duration of the disease and on the presence of any underlying chronic liver disease which may have already compromised the patients’ nutritional status. Therefore the aim of the present study is to Determine Effectiveness of Nutritional Support on Clinical Outcomes of Patients Suffering from Viral Hepatitis C. The study was conducted in the outpatient Liver Disease Unit in the Mansoura General Hospital. A convenient sample of 120 adult patients of both sexes with the diagnosis of hepatitis C virus within three months as follows: study group they consisted of 60 adult patients receiving their nutritional support as calculated by researcher and confirmed by treating physician. Control group they consisted of 60 adult patients receiving their nutritional support as patient home diet. Three tools were used in this study. The results Changes in daily caloric intake and BMI among study group comparing to control group. Significant decrease in daily caloric intake among middle age group at the second visit after one month and third visit pretreatment. The daily caloric intake and BMI were significantly differing among males and females in the study groups in different visits comparing to control groups. Highly significantly decrease in daily caloric intake among secondary and university educational level study group. Stability of the liver function test and improved score of the child Pugh scale in.
