Abstract

The study attempted to investigate the effectiveness of using peer-assisted reading strategies in developing sixth graders’ reading fluency and comprehension in English as a foreign language. Eighty sixth graders from El Tagribeyya Primary School No.1, Minia Educational Administration were randomly selected. The study adopted the quasi-experimental design as the eighty pupils were divided into two groups. The experimental group was taught by peer-assisted reading strategies; Retelling, Paragraph Shrinking & Prediction Relay while the control group was taught following the plan prescribed by the ministry of education in Egypt. The tools of the study included a manual framework, a teacher’s guide, a pupil’s handout, a reading fluency test & a reading comprehension test. The whole tools were judged by jury members. Analysis of the collected data indicated that the majority of the peer assisted model subjects achieved significantly higher levels in their reading fluency and comprehension tests than those of the control group. It was concluded that peer-assisted reading strategies help sixth graders develop their reading fluency and comprehension in English as a foreign language.
