Abstract

Congenital heart disease is the commonest single group of congenital abnormalities, where there is the presence of a structural heart defect at birth. Nearly one third of them will require surgical intervention in infancy. Most alterations in cardiovascular function in the pediatric population are the result of congenital heart disease The aim of this study was to assess psychomotor development of children with congenital heart disease. This study was a descriptive design, conducted at cardiac department and cardiac outpatient clinic of Tanta University Hospital. The data collection was carried out over a six months period starting fromOctober2012 to the end of March 2013. A sample consisted of hundred children who had congenital heart anomalies and their accompanying mothers, their age ranged from one month until three years for both gender. Tools of data collection by using three tools, the first tool was an interview questionnaire sheet. It was used to collect data about sociodemographic characteristics, medical and obstetric history of the studied mothers, children characteristics and children medical history. The second tool was physical assessment sheet to measure anthropometric measurement and investigation and the third tool, psychomotor development checklist according to ages of children. A pilot study was done on 10 mothers and their children with CHD and was carried out to ensure reliability, clarity and validity of the tool. Those who shared in the pilot study were excluded from the study sample.
