Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reproductive, cytogenetic and histopathological effects of chronic Chlorpyrifos (OP pesticide) toxicity on male goats. Based on age of the animal, the study was conducted in two trials, first and second , with control and treated group of five bucks each. Bucks were of 5 and 14 months age at the beginning of the experiment in the first and second trials, respectively.
All bucks were allowed to have a daily ration consisted of 0.5-1.5 kg concentrate and 0.5 kg Darawa (Zeamays). For the treated group, Darawa was sprayed by the Chlopyrifos in four treatment periods, 15 days each , for 60 days complete treatment period and bucks were allowed to fed on the sprayed Darawa 3 days after each spraying.
Total sperm abnormalities and secondary sperm abnormalities showed significant differences between the control and treated group of bucks one and two months after the end of the treatment period of the first trial while, they showed a significant difference only just after the end of the treatment period in the second trial. However, primary sperm abnormalities showed a significant increase one month after the end of the treatment period of the first trial only.
Inspite of showing a significant difference in chromosome deletion between the treated and control groups at all months of investigation of the first trial .They did not show any significant variation at all months of investigation of the second trial .
•Both break and pulverization reached their highest values at the 9th month of age of the first trial accompanied with a pronounced decrease of gaps and centromeric attenuations, respectively. Both items showed non-significant increase in bucks of the second trial.
As for the histopathological study of the testes of the treated
bucks, severe testicular degeneration and even necrosis was observed in the testes with spermatogenic arrest after the end of
the treatment period. Focal interstitial edema and the presence of many spermatid giant cells with leucocytic infiltration, mainly
lymphocytes were observed. The severity of these changes increased specially in bucks of the first trial to show small local areas of focal dystrophic calcification with few connective tissue proliferation three months after the end of the treatment period in the testes of bucks of the first trial. This was followed by a gradual regeneration of the degenerated semineferous tubules in both
trials.
•This study confirmed that the chronic toxicity of chlorpyrifos was
pronounced in immature male goats compared to the mature ones.
