Abstract The liver is a fundamental organ for maintenance of metabolichomeostasis and therefore, when the liver’s ability to maintain homeostasis is compromised, it can be expected that significant metabolic abnormalities will result. Despite the fact that malnutrition is not included in the Child-Pughclassification, its presence should alert clinicians to the same extent as doother complications, such as ascites and hepatic encephalopathy. Identifying the patients that are approaching the state of malnutrition by simple and easily applied methods is necessary in order to providenutritional support to those that need it the most. Therefore, nutritionaladvice by dietitians and supplementation of nutrients through oralfeeding, enteral feeding, and/or administration of specially designedformulae should be undertaken. |
