Abstract Platelets play a key role in hemostasis, which is the first line of defense against hemorrhage, and are implicated in the development of thrombosis. The expression of multiple membrane receptors, both constitutive and activation-dependent, mediates platelet adhesion and aggregation at sites of vascular lesion. Defects affecting platelets during pregnancy can lead to heterogeneous complications, such as thrombosis, first trimester miscarriage and postpartum hemorrhage. With focused laboratory evaluation and appropriate consultation with obstetricians, these patients uniformly have favorable outcomes and can be safely managed. |
