Abstract

A trial was made to isolate Staphylococci from some poultry
farms suffering from septicaemia, arthritis and swollen heads. In
this study, 217 random samples from joints, swollen heads and
various organs were collected from 80 chickens at different ages.
• The occurrence of S. aureus and S. epidermidis was 27.05 and
11.76%, respectively.
• Incidence of S. aureus as regard to sites and lesions was
highest (43.75%) in chickens showed arthritis (joint lesion)
followed by swollen head, yolk sac, heart blood, liver in a
percentage of 25, 25, 22.58 and 20%, respectively.
• Sensitivity of the isolated S. aureus strains indicated that
ampicillin followed by amoxicillin, penicillin and lincospectin
were the most effective antibiotics. S. aureus strains were
sensitive to these antibiotics with a percentage of 50, 45, 35
and 35%, respectively.
• The pathogenicity of S. aureus to 5 day-old balady chicks
revealed that subcutaneous route of infection gave higher
incidence of mortalities than the oral route.
• Infective dose of 105 induced clinical signs and postmortem
lesions. On the other hand, a dose of 1()6 gave severe clinical
signs and severe postmortem picture became more severe.
• Plasmid DNA profile of the isolated S. aureus using
polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed two different size of
plasmid DNA (5 and 8 Kbp).
