Abstract Medicinal plants and spices have been used for generations by humans as food and to treat diseases, these plants have found application in the food industry as antibacterial and antifungal agents. The objective of the present investigation aimed to evaluate the contamination levels in common medicinal and herbal plants that used in Egypt. This study focused on detection of predominant heavy fungal and bacterial contamination in medicinal herbs. Furthermore the antimicrobial activity of medicinal plants which extracted using different solvents were also performed, Study the susceptibility of different pathogenic bacteria to different antibiotics was also investigated. Detection of predominant heavy fungal contamination in medicinal herbs directed the study toward screening the fungal isolates for the probability of detecting the aflatoxins and evaluating the ability of using gamma-irradiation as a method for inhibition of production of aflatoxins in herbs samples. Furthermore the susceptibility of bacteria isolated at the sublethal doses of gamma irradiation of medicinal herbs against different antibiotics was performed. |
