Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate peri-implant bone height change in mini-implant retained mandibular overdenture using metal housing and resilient lining material for retention Ten patients were selected from among those attending the out-patient clinic, Prosthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University to participate in this study .Patients were precisely selected and thoroughly examined in an attempt to reduce human variables and eliminate any factor that might adversely affect the results of this study. Patients were rehabilitated by mucosa supported maxillary complete denture and mini implant retained mandibular overdenture. Standard clinical and laboratory techniques were followed for denture construction for all patients. Patients participating in this study were randomly divided into two equal groups according to the used attachment. Group I: Patients were rehabilitated by mini- implant retained mandibular overdenture using metal housing. Group II: Patients were rehabilitated by mini-implant retained mandibular overdenture using silicone soft liner. Surgical installation of the implant was performed under strict aseptic conditions and delayed loading protocol was followed. Patients were recalled frequently for post-insertion inspection and adjustments. Follow-up visits were scheduled at time of denture insertion, six, and twelve months for inspection of the prosthesis and radiographic evaluation of the peri-implant bone height change. Marginal bone height change around the implants was evaluated using the linear measurement system supplied by the digital panoramic radiograph Results obtained from this study showed that: -Mini-implant retained mandibular rehabilitation using either metal housing or resilient lining material for the treatment of mandibular edentulism, is a reliable treatment modality over the one year observation period. Although peri-implant bone level loss showed statistically significantly difference, the mean values of the studied groups remained within the normal limits and were in accordance with the well-defined criteria for treatment success. -The use of resilient silicone lining material for retention serves as a shock absorber which in turn results in a considerable decrease in the stresses transmitted to the implant and peri-implant bone. |
