Abstract Considering several literatures enlightening the antitumor nature of the benzofuran ring, a series of 2-substituted benzofuran derivatives having antitumor activity was synthesized and evaluated for their antitumor activity. In the present investigation, new series of benzofuran derivatives having different substitutions at the C2-position was prepared. In order to obtain the target compounds, different chemical pathways were adopted and found to be successful. In the present study, fifty nine novel compounds that are not mentioned in the available literature were synthesized. The formation and purity of the newly synthesized compounds were checked by TLC, and their structures were elucidated through elemental microanalyses, IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectroscopy. Forty six compounds of the newly synthesized compounds have been subjected to in vitro antitumor assay, in order to evaluate their antitumor activity and the degree of cytotoxicity of these compounds. The compounds were tested for antitumor activity against liver carcinoma cell line (HEPG2) using the SRB assay. The results revealed that most of our synthesized compounds are active especially, compounds 87f, 89 which were proved to be the most potent with IC50 = 12.4 μg/ml and 13 μg/ml, respectively. |
