Abstract

Acne is a common skin disease. People of all races and ages get acne, especially teenagers and young adults , nearly 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 get acne, for most people, acne goes away by age 30, but some people in their forties and fifties still get acne.
An association between diet and acne has long been postulated and research in this field has been accelerating during the past few years. It has become increasingly clear that nutritional factors such as vitamins and minerals are involved in the pathogenesis of acne. Zinc is a trace element found in the structure of many metalloenzymes that play a role in important functions such as protein synthesis, DNA and RNA replication and cell division. Zinc is therefore required for growth and development .
Over 300 enzymes have been shown to contain zinc as a cofactor. Zinc is the only metal encountered in each class, i.e. oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases and ligases. Its physical and chemical properties make it highly adaptable to bound to protein and enzymes which carry out diverse biological functions.
The acne-like papulopustular lesions in zinc deficiency and their rapid improvement with zinc supplementation have led some investigators to assess the relationship between serum zinc level and acne. These studies are few in number but have shown that patients with acne have low serum zinc level although these levels do not correlate with the severity of disease.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate and provide an insight about the possible role of zinc in acne vulgaris.
A case-control study included 50 patients with mild, moderate and severe acne vulgaris, presented to the Dermatology Department, Benha University Hospital, out patients clinics . A group of 40 healthy persons were included as control group.
All studied patients were subjected to history taking, dermatological examination and measurement of serum zinc level.
Patients were classified into three groups according to the clinical severity of acne vulgaris as follows; 7 patients with mild acne vulgaris, 18 patients with moderate acne vulgaris and 25 patients with severe acne vulgaris.
Venous blood samples were collected for assay serum zinc level by biodiagnostic kits.
Regarding to this study, there was no statistically significant difference between patients group and control group as regards age distribution.
This study showed that there was a highly statistically significant difference in serum zinc level in cases as compared to control group (p<0.05).
There was no statistically significant in serum zinc level as regards grades.
There was no statistically significant difference in serum zinc level between age < 20 year and age > 20 year .
There was no statistically significant difference between serum zinc level in male and female in acne group.
There was no statistically significant difference between serum zinc level in male and female in control group.
There was statistically significant difference between serum zinc level as regards back acne.
There was statistically significant difference between back acne as regards age.
There was statistically no significant difference between back acne and duration.
There was no statistically significant difference in degree of acne when correlated to serum zinc level, duration and age.
There was statistically significant difference in duration when correlated to age. While, there is no statistically significant difference in duration when correlated to serum zinc level.
from the results of the current study, the following could be concluded:
• Patients with mild, moderate and severe acne vulgaris have deficiency in serum zinc level.
• Zinc supplementation might prove to be helpful in the treatment of acne vulgaris.
