Abstract The study was carried out on 30 hemodialysis patients suffering from increased blood pressure during and/or immediately after HD sessions compared to their predialysis BP values. The study was composed of two phases, the first phase during which the dialysate calcium used was 1.75mmol/l for 12 sessions, and the second phase during which the dialysate calcium used was 1.25mmol/l for another 12 sessions. Blood pressure was measured pre, every hour and post-dialysis of each session of both phases, serum total calcium and ionized calcium were measured pre- and post-dialysis of the first and 12th sessions of both phases. Any distressing symptoms during treatment were observed. The study showed a significant increase of post-dialysis blood pressure, serum total and ionized calcium compared to the pre-dialysis levels during the first phase, and there was a significant decrease in post-dialysis blood pressure, serum total and ionized calcium compared to the pre-dialysis levels during the second phase. |
