Abstract In the last decades, it was proved that working in the operating rooms (OR) has health hazards on the working personnel. The hazards are due to pollution of OR by various pollutants. The aim of the study is to discuss pollution in the operating rooms from all its aspects as types, sources of various pollutants, their hazardous effects and the recommended safety measures to avoid or at least decrease the incidence of these hazardous effects. The types and sources of OR pollutants are classified into anesthetic pollutants (waste gases), physical pollutants (radiation including ionizing radiation (x-ray) and non ionizing radiation (laser) and noise), chemical pollutants (skin-cleaning fluids and aerosol sprays), biogenic pollutants (bacterial, fungal and viral) and electrical hazards. There are many hazards to the various operating room pollutants; these are hazards to the medical staff and hazards to the medical staff and patients. The hazards to medical staff are hazardous effects of chronic repeated exposure of OR personnel to waste inhalational anesthetics, hazards of repeated exposure to noise, chemical dependence and stress. |
