Abstract
Children and adolescents with chronic illnesses,including cardiac diseases,are more likely to have emotional,behavioral and psychiatric symptoms than healthy peers,and may be psychologically affected or traumatized by medical or surgical treatments(Turkel and Pao,2007).This morbidity significantly impacts the child’s neurodevelopmental,psychosocial,and physical functioning and diminishes his quality of life (QOL)(Marino et al,2010 Patients,with structural congenital cardiac anomalies and those with acquired heart dysfunction,vary in severity and are often categorized into mild,moderate, and severe states. Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic measures for congenital and acquired heart disease have led to a larger proportion of patients who reach adolescence and adulthood.Living with heart disease has many psychosocial consequences for children and adolescents (Lindberg et al,2002).This study aimed to clarify the frequency and age of onset of psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents with different congenital or acquired heart diseases, and to assess the psychiatric morbidity of those who underwent cardiac surgery.
