Abstract

The karyotype of Acomys cahirinus was found to consist of 6 submetacentric pairs, 10 metacentric pairs, one small acrocentric pair and acroc8utric sex chromosomes, the diploid number being 2n ::= 36 and the number of chromosome arms FN ::= 68.
Banded karyotypes were prepared in order to identify the individual
chromosome pairs.
In the 36 specimens examined, eight were found to differ from the standard karyotype. This lends support to the theory that speciation is still in progress in the genus Acomys. The large metacentric pair was found to be submetacentric in two individuals and heteromorphic submeta-/ metacelltrlc in three others. The aberration was explained as pericentric
Other aberrations were an XO female, one male with a large YYchromosome, and a specimen with one of the members of the small acrocentric pair being larger than the other. One specimen had three abnormalities; apart from heterornorphism of the large submetacentric pair) pair No. (j I3howed deletion of one member and one of t.l}e small acrocentrics appeared larger than the other.
The karyotype of Meriones crassus consi::;ted of one metacentric pair, six subacro- to submetacentric pairs, among which one minute pair and the sex chromosomes, and 23 acrocentric pairs, the diploid number being 2n ::= 60 and the number of chromosome arms FN ::= 74
Comparison of banded ka.ryotypes of Rattus rattus alexandrinus g. E. frugivorus, showed no differences between the two forms, supporting the previous conclusion that they should be considered color
phases and not subspecies.
