Abstract This thesis lS concerned with analyzing argumentative discourse in four religious debates by the Islamic propagandist Ahmad Deedat. The analysis conducted alms at uncoverlng the strategies adopted by Deedat on the semantic pragmatic & syntactic levels, through which he presents his arguments, so as to present a better understanding of argumentative discourse. The thesis is divided into four chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. Chapter one lS a reVlew of the theories of argumentation from linguistic & logical perspectives, it also comments on the theoretical framework adopted in this study. Chapter two deals with the data at the pragmatic level, it investigates sequences of speech acts that exist within the three argumentative stages. It also investigates ”intertextuali tyff as a dominant phenomenon in the data analyzed. |
