Abstract

Fungal infections continue to cause major complications in cancer patients. With the increasing use of aggressive chemotherapy causing profound, prolonged depressed immunity,so the risk of mycoses has increased. This study was done to study the prevalence of fungal infections in hematological malignancies.Nasal swabs, sputum, skin lesions swabs and Para nasal swabs were obtained from patients with hematological malignancies who were admitted in Tanta cancer institute center from both inpatients and out patients’ clinics departments and they were collected and cultured on Sabaraud’s dextrose agar.94% of cases gave positive fungal cultures with only 6% of them showed no fungal growth and we found that the most common fungi isolated were Penicillium spp. 39.4 %, Candida spp. 38.3%,Aspergillus 17% and Mucor 5.3%.In conclusion, Patients with hematological malignancies is considered to be at high risk of the infection during subsequent intensive chemotherapy, so that we must reconsider how we manage and prevent these infections. Various fungal agents are responsible for this complication, but Penicillum spp. and Candida spp. are the most frequently isolated fungi in the studied patients.
