Abstract

Two virulence factors known as type 1 fimbriae (fimH) and hemolysin (hlyA) among 99 clinical isolates of Escherichia coli causing urinary tract infections have been studied. Through determination of both factors by phenotypic assay which 63.6 % of E. coli strains isolated expressed type 1 fimbriae while 8% expressed hemolysin. Antibacterial activities of trimethoprim/sulpha methoxazole (SXT), ciprofloxacin (CIP), cefotaxime (CTX), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMC), amikacin (AK) and imipenem (IMP) against 99 clinical isolates of E. coli were determined. Highest resistance rate (82.5%) among phenotypic expression by fimH E. coli isolates was recorded for (SXT). On the other hand, 62.5% of phenotypic isolates expressed by hlyA showed resistance to (AMC) and (SXT). Twenty six isolates of E. coli selected as antibiotic resistant strains were subjected to both virulence gene analysis using PCR technique. Twenty isolates were multi resistance to 4 antibiotics and the other six varied in their resistance and were capable of producing both virulence factors. Results of genotypic analysis did not show complete agreement to those of phenotypes.
