Abstract

It is known that rheumatic heart disease frequently results in isolated mitral regurgitation without concomitant mitral stenosis especially in countries with a high prevalence of rheumatic fever like our country. The potential role of mitral valve prolapse in the etiology of mitral regurgitation in patients with history of rheumatic fever is of great interest (Tomaru etal., 1987).
Recent surgical pathologic data have suggested the presence of a new pathologic entity: post—. inflammatory mitral valve prolapse (Tomaru et al.. 1987).
The presence of this intity was supported by several investigators (Marcus et al., 1986, and chauvaud et al., 1986) who demonstrated an unusually high incidence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) affecting the anterior mitral leaflet in patients with pure rheumatic mitral regurgitation.
In practice it was found that many childern with documented history of rheumatic fever had an apical systolic murmur, atypical chest pain and br palpitations.Accordingly, this work is planned to evaluate patients who had a well documented history of rheumatic fever with or without rheumatic valvular heart disease to find out the incidence of mitral valve prolapse on the basis of the most recent echocardiographic criteria.
